SAND is an independent literary arts journal, published twice annually in Berlin and sold around the world. I designed and illustrated the cover for Issue 11.
Issue 11 was unofficially called "The Berlin Issue", featuring many stories from authors (both past and present) focussed on Berlin at different times in history. For the cover, I illustrated the neighborhood (or Kiez) of Kreuzberg from my perspective as a relative newcomer. Depicted in this "map" are several images that have become synonymous with Kreuzberg and surrounding areas, such as Treptower Bridge, the famed orange Buttler bins, U-Bahn, discarded Club Mate and Sterni bottles, BDSM fashion, bicycles and discarded couches.
The interior layout plays features rulers and guides, inspired by the quote "Berlin is an unfinished city", to convey the idea that this physical journal is also a work-in-progress.
Issue 11 i now sold out.
